A Look Back At 2020: A Year Of Resilience

01/27/2021

Celebrating our bikeshare program’s milestones during an unprecedented year

Last year was a trying year to say the least. Despite the many challenges our city faced, we proved to be resilient and came together to support one another through it all. Learning to navigate day-to-day life during the pandemic, the Bike Chattanooga bikeshare team stood by the community as we evolved to our new normal.

In the face of the pandemic, Bike Chattanooga helped support how our city moves. Whether it be running essential errands, commuting to work, exercise or just getting out of the house, Bike Chattanooga became a key part of Chattanoogans’ daily COVID-19 routine. Having the busiest year in Bike Chattanooga history, we welcomed a record-breaking number of riders to the bikeshare family. We look forward to serving our riders in 2021 as we continue to operate a key piece of Chattanooga’s active transportation network.

A look back on 2020 with Bike Chattanooga

RECORD RIDERSHIP

Closing off 2020 with 88,600 trips, Bike Chattanooga once again broke its ridership record – thank you to all our returning and new riders! With a 20% increase in bikeshare usage, more Chattanoogans than ever joined us on two wheels. With such a reassuring surge in ridership, the community opted for Bike Chattanooga as a way to get around while maintaining a safe physical distance from others. From exploring our city’s beautiful green spaces to getting essential workers to the frontline, Bike Chattanooga continues to revolutionize how we travel. Our top 5 stations saw over 13k trips in 2020: 200 River St Outdoor Chattanooga, 100 Walnut St, Hubert Fry Center Tennessee Riverpark, Renaissance Park.

Can we break the ridership record again this year? Register for an Annual Pass for less than $5 a month and tell your friends!

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!

Why did so many entrust their travel to Bike Chattanooga during the pandemic? We like to believe, safety! With an unparalleled commitment to keeping our customers and staff safe, Bike Chattanooga continued operations during COVID-19 with new policies and procedures to support those who needed to travel on an urgent basis. Exercising protocols such as cleaning bikes and stations with germ-killing disinfectant on an ongoing basis, the team worked hard to put the health of our community first. Bike Chattanooga also encouraged the community to access the system via the PBSC or Transit app for a contactless experience, in addition to following hygiene practices set out by the CDC. As we welcome this new year still combating the pandemic, we will continue to provide a safe, healthy and fun transportation option for Chattanoogans.

A HELPING HAND FOR OUR FRONTLINE HEROES

Our frontline professionals continuously worked to protect our community through the COVID-19 pandemic. To thank them for their essential efforts as well as lend a helping hand, Bike Chattanooga offered FREE Annual Passes to the frontline workforce. Available to healthcare, transit and first responder professionals, we distributed more than 200 free annual memberships for frontline workers to access free bikeshare transportation, which saw a 62% usage increase in stations adjacent to medial facilities between April – September. We are grateful for Chattanooga’s frontline workforce – thank you for your brave service.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY

Together, we offset carbon emissions by 341k lbs through the 379k miles travelled on bikeshare in 2020! Teaming up with our friends at GreenTrips to promote sustainable transportation, we continued to encourage Chattanoogans to reduce traffic and air pollution in our community via green transit – and free rewards! The GreenTrips program encourages users to opt for sustainable travel via their rewards program. All you have to do is sign up and log your biking, walking, carpooling and public transportation trips. Eligible sustainable travel is assigned points redeemable at restaurants, retailers and more. Need to run errands? Hop on bikeshare instead of jumping in the car and enjoy some fresh air as you pedal through town – because every trip counts! Don’t forget to log your trip to get those GreenTrips points.
