Bike Share 101

With trips up over 60% in 2021, we know you’ve been telling your friends about Bike Chattanooga and how they should give us a try – they’ve been listening. With all these Bike Chattanooga first-timers and even more people waiting in the wings, we wanted to take the opportunity to re-introduce ourselves:

Hi, We’re Bike Chattanooga – the best public bike share system in all of Chattanooga!
(okay, the *only* public bike share system in Chattanooga…. but still…)

Bike Chattanooga is for everyone.

Whether you’re commuting, running errands or sightseeing, Bike Chattanooga is a fun, flexible and cost-effective way to navigate the city. Buy a pass or become a member to access over 400 bikes and 42 stations citywide.

What to know before you go:

The Rules of the Road are extremely important. These rules help to keep everyone safe while riding and since they’re so important we always recommended new riders read them before getting to a station. If you’re a long time rider, do us a favor and read over the rules at least once a year as a refresher.

Next up, is to take a quick look at our FAQ page. You have questions and we have answers. The FAQ page is a great resource to answer anything from “What is Bike Share?” to “What should I do if I need to return my bike and the station is full?”

Step one: Find a Bike

Locate a bike at one of our 42 stations across the city. If you like to plan ahead, you can see current bike availability on the System Map or mobile apps.

Step two: purchase a pass

You can purchase an Access Pass in one of two ways:

  1. Buy a Pass at any one of our 42 stations by following the step-by-step instructions on the kiosk touchscreen
  2. Use one of our mobile apps to buy right from your phone.

Step three: Get a Bike

Once you buy your Access Pass, you will receive a 5-digit ride code. Find an available bike, and enter the ride code on the dock keypad (on the left-hand side of the dock of your selected bike). After you enter the code, the light at the dock should turn green indicating that the bike is unlocked – firmly pull the bike back from the dock.

Keep in mind that ride codes are only valid for 5 minutes and are created for single-use only. Once your ride code expires or if  you want to ride again while your pass is still active, you must insert the same credit or debit card into the station to receive a new ride code.

Please note: When you arrive at a station you may have the option of a traditional bike or an e-bike (we have 2 types of e-bikes). If you want to learn more about the differences between each type of bike you can find more information here.

Step four: Start Riding

Explore the city, run errands, ride with friends – Take unlimited 60-minute trips while your pass or membership is active. After 60 minutes, overage fees apply.

Step five: Return the bike

Yes, you have to return it. We’re SHARING remember?

Once you’re at the dock, match the triangle on the front of the bike with the dock, and insert the bike. A green light will appear on the dock indicating that the bike has been locked in the dock.

Pro Tip:
Before your 60-minute trip is up, dock the bike and unlock another to continue riding without accumulating overage fees.

Step six: Repeat

Ready to ride again? Repeat the process and see more of Chattanooga!

Don’t forget: You can enjoy UNLIMITED 60-minute, station-to-station trips while your pass or membership is active. This means if you purchase our daily pass to commute to work in the morning, use that same pass after work to get to happy hour, then AGAIN to get back home. (pretty cool, huh?)
